The tell-all novel recounts his six year detention at the US-run jail over accusations
he fought for al-Qaeda.

about 10 thousand dollars.

However, the NSW Supreme court froze profits from the book earlier this month under

VIC:Police to move on motorcycle hoons

MELBOURNE, Feb 11 AAP - Police will clamp down on hoon motorcyclists in a one-night
blitz at a popular Melbourne restaurant strip.

Police are set to swarm on Carlton's Lygon St Italian precinct and in surrounding streets
on Friday night as part of Operation Traction.

The move was sparked by a motorcyclist caught doing 122km/h in a 40km/h zone on Lygon
Street last week.

Police said they were appalled by the increase in reports of motorcyclists riding on
footpaths and performing unsafe manoeuvres on Lygon Street.

The Melbourne Highway Patrol said there was "reckless behaviour" displayed by some motorcyclists.

"Riders need to make sure they wear appropriate clothing, avoiding lane splitting,
and keep an eye out for other vehicles on the road," a patrol spokesman said in a statement.

During Operation Traction in January this year, police nabbed 117 drivers and motorcyclists
during a two-night blitz.

Fed: Qantas cancels more services due to volcanic ash

SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - Qantas is urging people to reconsider non-urgent travel to Europe
after cancelling more flights due to leave Australia on Wednesday and Thursday.

European airports have been shut and carriers diverted following a volcano eruption
in Iceland last Wednesday that sent a massive ash cloud across Europe.

Qantas has cancelled Wednesday's flights from Singapore to London and Frankfurt and
Thursday's scheduled flights from Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Flights from Europe to Asian destinations have also been cancelled for the two days.

However, the carrier says most flights between Australia and Asian destinations will
still operate from Sydney and Melbourne.

Qantas spokesman David Epstein says flight cancellations into and out of Europe have
now had an impact on more than 15,000 of the airline's customers.

"Qantas is urging passengers to reconsider any non-urgent travel to Europe," he said
in a statement on Tuesday.

"Customers due to travel on cancelled services will be transferred to next available
scheduled services or offered a refund."

He said Qantas was looking at operating extra flights once European airspace was given
the all clear, but people may be waiting weeks to get a seat.

"At this time there is no new or additional seat availability on services to Europe
until early May," he said.

"Qantas will be doing everything to meet passenger needs once flights into Europe are
able to resume, however access to UK and European airports will be difficult due to the
backlog of flights from around the world."

RTA director Wayne Spencer said December sales figures showed the worst fears of retail
traders about the WA economy had not been realised.

"We've got the Australian dollar and we've got a number of other items out there that
are making a mix that retailers have to work with," Mr Spencer told ABC radio.

NSW: Roozendaal eats humble pie after 'tough' week

By David Crawshaw and Nick Ralston

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - NSW Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal has taken the blame and will
cop any fine for his ministerial car illegally travelling in a Sydney bus lane.

Photographs of Mr Roozendaal published today show his vehicle, driven by a minder,
zipping down the bus lane past gridlocked peak-hour traffic on Old South Head Road last
week.

Travelling illegally in a bus lane carries a penalty of three demerit points and a $225 fine.

The incident was the latest in a series of slip-ups by the novice minister.

On Wednesday he had to apologise for raising his middle finger at Nationals MP Melinda
Pavey in the NSW upper house.

Mr Roozendaal, who only took over the roads portfolio two months ago, was criticised
last month for being flippant about pollution in Sydney's M5 East tunnel.

He advised motorists to wind up their windows to escape noxious fumes.

A contrite Mr Roozendaal today apologised for the bus-lane incident but said that at
the time he had been reading in the car and was unaware of what was going on.

"Unfortunately my vehicle was in a bus lane, I take full moral responsibility of that,
people should be aware to stay out of bus lanes," Mr Roozendaal said.

"I was unaware at the time it was happening, I was reading some documents at the time."

He pledged to pay the applicable fine and make an equivalent donation to Father Chris
Riley's Youth off the Streets charity, but said his driver would cop the loss of demerit
points.

Mr Roozendaal said he accepted that the community expected a high standard from publicly
elected representatives.

"There are no excuses for breaking the bus rules, but I guess we are only human," he said.

"It's been a tough week."

It is not the first time a NSW government minister has fallen foul of road rules.

Former planning minister Craig Knowles lost his licence last April after being caught
drink-driving in Sydney.

Five years ago, former premier Bob Carr was fined for not wearing a seatbelt.

Opposition leader Peter Debnam today branded Mr Roozendaal "arrogant" and said his
illegal use of a bus lane highlighted the frustrations of Sydney motorists.

"Everybody's angry every single day," he said.

"They're frustrated with the lack of traffic planning, they're frustrated that the
government hasn't been able to attract people back to public transport."

Mr Roozendaal was "accident prone" and "out of his depth" as roads minister, he said.

"He seems to be getting himself into trouble every single day," Mr Debnam said.

ON BOARD THE HMAS KANIMBLA, April 2 AAP - Tragedy has struck Australia's relief effort
on Nias, with a Navy helicopter crashing, killing nine personnel on board.

The chopper crashed this afternoon while on approach to Amandraya village on the remote
west coast of Nias.

The Sea King helicopter had been ferrying an emergency medical team from the Kanimbla
to the village as part of relief efforts to outlying areas of Nias following a devastating
earthquake on Monday.

told journalists who had been on board the Kanimbla for a media tour.

He said two on board the helicopter survived and were airlifted to the Kanimbla for
emergency surgery by the ship's second helicopter, which landed with a medical team after
seeing smoke from the crash site.

"They are in a serious condition with leg fractures and other injuries," Cmdr McGuire said.

"We believe the rest of the personnel died."

On board the chopper were five naval personnel as well as three from the Air Force
and one member of the Army.

(BW)(TX-SAILPOINT) SailPoint Global Market Pulse Survey Underscores Risk of Insider Threats

- Alarming Amount of British Employees With Access To Employer or Client Systems Would Feel Comfortable Profiting From Propriety Data By Selling It On The Internet

Technology Writers

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE) - Jul. 26, 2011-- A recent SailPoint Market Pulse Survey examined the current state of employee compliance with corporate policy related to private, sensitive data to help identify weak links in IT risk mitigation programs.

Conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of SailPoint, the survey of 3,484 employees in the United States, Great Britain and Australia found that an alarming number of employees are exposing their companies to internal sabotage and theft.

To help prevent one of the most challenging types of security breaches - "insider threats" - organizations need to fully understand "who has access to what" across their enterprises and put in place proper IT controls to ensure that access rights are appropriate. SailPoint's Market Pulse Survey underscores this very real risk to organizations: 22 per cent of US, 29 per cent of Australian and almost half of British (48 per cent) employees who have access to their employer's or clients' private data, and who answered the question, indicated they would feel comfortable doing something with that data, regardless if that access was intentional or accidental. Further, 10 per cent of American, 12 per cent of Australian and 27 per cent of British employees with access admitted they would forward electronic files to a non-employee, and 9 per cent of Americans, 8 per cent of Australians and 24 per cent of Britons of these same groups admitted they would copy electronic data and files to take with them when they leave a company.

"Organizations should be very concerned about the number of employees that openly admitted to misusing proprietary data," said Jackie Gilbert, vice president of marketing and cofounder at SailPoint. "These results show that insider threats represent a significant risk to the business.

Some of the biggest and most costly data breaches have been directly tied to company employees. Having a written policy is not enough to ensure data security. Organizations need to have automated controls in place to monitor and manage user access controls in order to minimize the risk of insider theft or sabotage."

SailPoint's Market Pulse Survey also questioned if an employee would feel comfortable profiting from proprietary information by selling it on the Internet. While only 5 per cent of American and 4 per cent of Australian employees with access who answered the question selected this response, an alarming 24 per cent of British employees with access said they would feel comfortable selling data. Added Gilbert: "Unfortunately, it's quite easy these days for employees to sell personal data on the Internet and there are not enough controls in place to prevent this theft from happening.

It's startling to see such a high number of Great Britain employees saying they would profit from selling proprietary data on the Internet.

That's a wake up call that companies need to take a more aggressive stance, particularly in certain geographies."

Identity governance enables companies to manage the risk of insider threats while allowing necessary access for employees by strengthening an organization's controls over both permanent employee and contractor access privileges. Identity governance minimizes risk by eliminating high-risk accounts, proactively detecting and remediating policy violations, and automating the review of user access privileges on a regular basis to ensure they align with corporate policy.

In addition to surveying employees about access to private, sensitive data, the SailPoint Market Pulse survey also asked them about accessing corporate date through the use of mobile devices. The results highlight the importance of automatically de-provisioning employees given the proliferation of mobile devices in the workforce. Specifically, 15 per cent of American, 29 per cent of British and 18 per cent of Australian employees use their mobile devices to access their company's private Intranet or portals.

"Mobile devices can make it easier for a disgruntled employee to do a significant amount of damage," said Gilbert. "If an employee has just been fired, it's no longer sufficient to turn off email and confiscate their laptop. A disgruntled employee can do a lot of damage from a mobile device before he or she even reaches the elevator. As part of a successful identity governance strategy, companies must have the ability to immediately revoke all access privileges including access to private Intranet or portals."

Harris Interactive Survey Methodology

This study was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of SailPoint among a total of 2,241 adults aged 16+ within Great Britain and 1,023 adults age 18-64 in Australia from May 25-June 2, 2011 and among 2,309 adults aged 18 and older from May 24-26, 2011 via its QuickQuery omnibus product in the United States. Of these, 1,407 British, 707 Australian and 1,370 U.S. adults were employed full-time, part-time and or self-employed, and among these, 939 British, 378 Australian and 701 U.S. employees have access to employer's or clients' computer systems. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Hacking bid foiled.

Manama, April 7 (BNA) -- Bahraini daily '' The Gulf Daily News'' computer experts were yesterday trying to identify files planted on one of our servers by hackers apparently from Iran. A group calling itself the Delta Hacking Team tried to hack the GDN's website, along with four other publications belonging to our parent group Al Hilal, on Tuesday. Security measures meant they were unable to tamper with the GDN's website, but they did plant files on one of our servers that have since been removed, this was published by the daily itself. However, they succeeded in changing the homepages of four other publications, replacing them with a map of the region and labelling it as the Persian Gulf. Trade Arabia webmaster Francis Pangilinan said Al Hilal's IT team worked overnight on Tuesday to ensure minimal disruption. "The hacking happened on Tuesday at 1pm," said Pangilinan, who is in charge of monitoring and updating Al Hilal websites including the GDN. Replicate "I discovered their attempt (to hack the GDN) as four other websites had been hit. "The hackers changed the sites' main pages and placed a message with their name and a picture of the Arabian Gulf, naming it the Persian Gulf. "They were not successful in changing the GDN's homepage, as it has been secured well to protect it from such attempts." The hackers did plant files on one of the GDN's servers, but our IT team was able to remove them and was yesterday trying to identify their nature. "The files are programmed to replicate themselves on the folder structure of the site, but visitors did not sense such changes," said Mr Pangilinan. "We have been working all night to ensure this doesn't affect the GDN site." The GDN receives an average of 32,793 visits a day to our website, which recorded 16 million page views last month alone. It is understood some users have faced viewing difficulties since the start of the week due to an update of Internet Explorer by Microsoft. Anyone experiencing problems viewing the site should select "compatibility view" in the Tools menu or switch to other browsers such as Firefox or Chrome. It is believed the Delta Hacking Team behind Tuesday's attack is Iranian based on messages left on other sites it has targeted. Another clue is the map left on four Al Hilal websites identifying the region as the Persian Gulf - a name still used by Iran, despite the GCC calling it the Arabian Gulf. E M. REALITY CHECK MAKING SOAP.

By Donna McIntyre

Two rural women who have done well working other people into a lather about their business, but not themselves, are Kay Parker and Dixie Boraman of Lavish Soap.

The neighbours started making soap as a hobby in the kitchens of their North Otago homes.

``Our first attempts were not encouraging,'' says Dixie. ``One cake of soap looked like pate and smelt like the Sunday roasting dish.

``However, this only motivated us to get it better. It took us a year to get a base recipe we were happy with. My hens ate a few trial runs.

``The most difficult thing was sourcing ingredients. We wanted to make something natural without preservatives or fixatives and ingredients had to be organic if possible.''

Word soon spread about the business. ``I think if we had tried to undertake an enterprise like this in the city, it wouldn't have worked,'' says Dixie. ``Oamaru people are also supportive and enjoy being able to buy a locally-made product as a gift for friends and family.''

They find the best time to make soap is in the cooler months, as it sets better. Lavish Soap is made in small batches and hand stirred. When firm, the soaps are sliced and left to sit for five weeks to harden.

One reason the soap is popular is that it can be used by people with sensitive skin. Lavish's goat's milk and almond bars, which people with eczema and psoriasis have found soothing, was featured on One News a couple of years ago, which led to a jump in orders and gave Kay and Dixie the confidence to resign from their other part-time jobs.

When they get big orders, they call on local women to help. ``We supply all the ingredients and equipment and they make it in their own time,'' says Dixie.

Kay and Dixie have some tips for anyone considering a similar business. ``We initially went to a lot of market days and discussed with customers their preferences ... and the internet is a great tool for anyone, especially in the country.''

Plus a word of caution: ``I would recommend anyone looking at setting up their own business, no matter what size, to think carefully about what they call it,'' says Dixie.

``We ran into problems as another New Zealand company had trademarked the name Lavish and wasn't willing to negotiate with us.

``However, we had been using the name Lavish prior to their registration, so we were able to continue using it.''

As well as their website, they now have a shop in Oamaru. Lavish Soap is also distributed through health- food stores and pharmacies nationwide.

They say they would like the business to grow to a point where it earns them both an average wage.

``This is certainly our goal, but we don't want to reach it if it means compromising on our lifestyle or values.''

AutoTrader.com Named "Innovator of the Year" During Verint Systems' 2008 Customer Conference.

Michael Boyt Honored for Leveraging Impact 360 Workforce Management to Improve Contact Center Operations

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- Verint Systems Inc. today announced that AutoTrader.com, a leading Internet auto classifieds marketplace and consumer information website, has been named its 2008 "Innovator of the Year."

Honored during Verint's 12th annual user conference was AutoTrader.com's Michael Boyt. As senior forecaster and capacity planning analyst, Boyt was nominated and is being recognized for introducing solutions and processes that have supported the company in optimizing workforce performance, introducing new efficiency gains, and aligning resources in support of both customer needs and operational requirements. The Innovator of the Year honor is designed to recognize workforce optimization practitioners focused on new approaches to today's business challenges, along with initiatives that drive revenue, heighten employee morale and enhance the customer experience.

With almost four million vehicle listings posted to its site, AutoTrader.com is focused on being the ultimate automotive marketplace for buying and selling new, used and certified pre-owned automobiles. The company works to provide consumers with more control of the buying process. Taking an information-oriented approach, complete with its decision tools in Research & Compare, the company helps consumers find the vehicles that align with their needs.

In support of AutoTrader.com's growing customer base, Boyt and his team developed and implemented a program that leverages the Impact 360[R] Workforce Management solution from the Verint([R]) Witness Actionable Solutions[TM] business line. His approach to forecasting and scheduling has helped the company identify peak call times, allowing supervisors to schedule team meetings, training and community service during periods when call volume has decreased. AutoTrader.com also leverages the software's shift bidding and time off manager functionality - features that its agents have favorably responded to.

With two sides to the business - managing sales from automotive dealerships and private sellers - AutoTrader.com has experienced impressive improvements tied to its workforce management implementation. Under Boyt's guidance, the team leveraged Impact 360 Workforce Management to successfully manage a 400 percent growth in AutoTrader.com's Private Seller Services call volume as the business centralized support into two call centers. The group now handles over 25,000 calls per week from private sellers and buyers and maintains under a two percent abandon rate. Further, Boyt and his team have helped reduce costs by staffing appropriately to meet workloads, in addition to driving business growth, and improving employee satisfaction and retention.

"AutoTrader.com is dedicated to providing our customers with a quality service experience that exceeds expectations while also providing flexible work options and continued training to our employees. Our workforce management solution has allowed us to accomplish both of these goals with expert planning and staffing for ever changing contact volumes," says Alan Smith, vice president of customer operations, AutoTrader.com. "We're very pleased that Michael has been recognized as Innovator of the Year for his contribution in maximizing the use of our technology investments and applying their value within our operations."

It also highlights technology advancements and newer market solutions making a big impact, such as VoIP, customer feedback surveys and speech analytics. At its core, Driving Innovation highlights winning strategies to ensure service-level excellence - all while maximizing technology investments to achieve key business and customer goals both inside and outside the contact center.

Straddling the line electronic. (on-line services for periodicals) (Word One) (Brief Article)

To go or not to go? Online, that is. That's the question many magazine editors are asking themselves these days. At a recent "A-list only" editorial conference sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors, attendees questioned the merits of placing their magazines on one of the bigger online services such as Compuserve, America Online or the Internet.

Mark Whitaker, an assistant managing editor at Newsweek, noted that the reason Newsweek has focused on CD-ROM applications rather than electronic services is his skepticism about the added value to its audience. Most participants agreed that reading a title on a computer screen defeats the very idea of a magazine, where the graphics, artwork and photography are crucial to drawing in readers.

One problem with online services, say doubting editors, is that you end up interacting with people who aren't necessarily readers. Garden Design editor in chief Dorothy Kalins complained that her attempt to "talk" with Time staffers about issues covered in the newsweekly degenerated into a dialogue with what some editors refer to as the "get-a-life crowd."

Rochelle Udell, Conde Nast's vice president, creative marketing/new media, wonders whether, when readers do access titles online, it's an effective venue: "We question participating in a large service because we don't want our readers distracted [by competing information]."

As the Case May Be: The Potential of Electronic Cases for Interdisciplinary Communication Instruction.(Education)

As the Case May Be: The Potential of Electronic Cases for Interdisciplinary Communication Instruction

D. Fisher, T. Bowers, A. Ellerstson, T. J. Brumm, and S. K. Mickelson. 2003. IEEE transactions on professional communication 46:313-319.

"In an effort to provide more workplace-like communication experiences, many teachers of professional communication have adopted the use of case studies .... [the authors] describe a case-study method that takes advantage of internet technologies to create a learning environment that transcends traditional case narratives. Our method contributes two additional components to the case study approach. First, we provide a learning environment in which students must actively construct knowledge essential for the development of the organization evoked in the case. Second, the day-to-day interactivity afforded by the electronic case serves as a learning platform by which students become progressively engaged in more complex disciplinary and communicative activities. Because it is computer mediated, the case affords the opportunity for students to more readily interact with a greater volume and wider range of information than can be transmitted through traditional hardcopy case studies."

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Named "Northwest SUV of the Year".

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

* New 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee wins 18th Annual Northwest Automotive Press Association's (NWAPA) Northwest Sport Utility Vehicle of the Year competition

* Jeep Grand Cherokee also wins "Best Off-Road SUV" category

* Award comes days after Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Association names Grand Cherokee its 2011 SUV of the Year winner

* NWAPA journalists cite Grand Cherokee's comfort and capability

The Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) has named the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee the "Northwest 2011 SUV of the Year," giving praise to its comfort and capability in all kinds of driving situations. NWAPA journalists also recognized the Jeep Grand Cherokee as winner of its "Best Off-Road SUV" award.

"In the Pacific Northwest, we can go from rain-soaked city streets up to the snowy mountains in about an hour," said Jeffrey Zurschmeide, NWAPA President. "We love our great outdoors as much as our coffee and micro-brew. So we look for an SUV that's comfortable and capable in all kinds of situations. To make the grade up here, an SUV has to meet the unique requirements of the Northwest, and that's why our members overwhelmingly voted the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee the Northwest SUV of the Year."

Twenty-six journalists from throughout the Northwest U.S. region drove and evaluated 20 different 2011 model year SUVs and crossover vehicles during a one-day competition late last week in Snoqualmie, Wash., that included hill-climbing and descent abilities, ride comfort, low-range handling, stability handling and emergency braking maneuvers.

"The Pacific Northwest provides perhaps the widest variety of driving conditions in the country, so it's a perfect place for all of the driving attributes of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee," said Mike Manley, President and CEO - Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "We're especially pleased that the NWAPA's journalist members recognize Grand Cherokee's comfort and capability in all weather conditions, both on- and off-road."

The 2011 Northwest SUV of the Year and Best Off-Road SUV awards come just days after the Jeep Grand Cherokee was recognized as "SUV of the Year" by the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Association. These awards are the most recent in a long list of honors given to the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Other accolades include:

The weaponized Internet: one could say that the Internet is a weapon that got out of the control of its creators.(Editor's View)

When the ARPANET was created, its intent was to provide a secure, dynamic, robust, and flexible communications system for universities and laboratories that would be resilient and functional even in the face of wartime disruption. It was never intended for civilian use. One wonders if the creators of the system now regret that the tools are now in the hands of the people.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

One of the most powerful forces in the world today is technology convergence and access. The increasing power and decreasing size of hardware and the growing capability and sophistication of software have given the average person the ability to perform tasks and achieve goals that were once the providence of large groups, organizations, and governments. The ability for the average person on the street to not only exchange information but also create (for both good and ill) new goods and services is changing the world and how we live in it.

We are now confronted with the societal ramifications of worldwide data exchange and information transparency. The problems we are currently having in Egypt and the rest of North Africa is a direct consequence of the people's ability to exchange information freely outside of the regular channels of press or politics. In this case, a very graphic protest action in public by one person in Tunisia was blogged by a bystander (enabled by device tech convergence) and goes viral, creating the social environment for change in the region.

This is analogous to TV in the old communist east letting the people there know there was a world beyond their borders where people lived freer. The Internet not only informs people of the lands beyond their borders, it also exposes actions within the borders that were previously unknown to the populace.

The weaponized Internet does not only address the "soft" arts of espionage, propaganda, communications, and research, it also is a powerful agent for action, enabling those motivated to hinder, block, and delete data in target systems via DoS and other viral attacks. As I mentioned in an earlier essay (http://www.ecnmag.com/blog/2011/01/soapbox/cyberwar.aspx), one can actually damage things in the physical world. This was demonstrated by the Stuxnet worm, which destroyed several hundred uranium centrifuges in a facility in Iran, a task that used to require a squadron of fighter-bombers and a lot or ordinance.

The Flat Earth also represents the international competition that now exists in every sector, as now not only can foreign companies compete with local business, but foreign individuals as well. Today anyone with a little capital and a lot of gumption can set up an international business from their living room, even to the extent of outsourcing manufacture and distribution in the case of hard products.

We are still trying to integrate (the old analogy of a pig being swallowed by a snake pops into mind) all of these new technologies and capabilities into our society, and nobody yet knows where it all will take us. One thing is for sure, it will certainly be an interesting ride.
